Nick Megson founded Abacus Flooring Solutions in August 2020 and hasn’t looked back since. After setting a modest target of £180,000 first year turnover, he more than tripled that in his first year of trading. Providing resin flooring solutions nationally from their base in Leicestershire, Abacus Flooring is going from strength to strength.
With 34 years’ experience in the resin floor industry as well as previously working for Tarmac , where he started his career. Nick has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the flooring industry.
This doesn’t however, mean that Abacus Flooring Solutions is a traditional company. Unlike many other flooring businesses in the UK, Nick has pushed through boundaries to ensure his business is environmentally friendly. He worked for the first company in 2005 who achieved Zero to Landfill and to date has won ten environment awards. Abacus Flooring Solutions has been shortlisted from many companies throughout Leicestershire down to the last four for the Environmental Impact Award. Abacus Flooring Solutions is paving the way when it comes to being kinder to our planet.
Nick and the business has been nominated for this huge award thanks to his pioneering thinking when it comes to recyclables. Using old white plastic such as light switches and toilet seats, it is ground into a powder to then be used in resin. This is a world first and has never been done before. Abacus Flooring Solutions are also part of the Big Blue Ocean Clean-up and have pledged to remove 10 tonnes of plastic from the oceans.
As well as being an official sustainable partner for the Big Blue Ocean Clean-up, the business also supports a local hospice and under 14’s football club.
Although, successful in its first year, Abacus Flooring is set for even greater achievements in years to come. Nick’s goals are to give away 50% of the business to five shareholders in the next five years. Thanks to the support and belief from his wife, Nick and his family sold their belongings including bikes, caravan and golf clubs and put everything into the business which instantly paid off.
Nick is very grateful for the support from his former colleague Samantha Stokes, founder of Cooper Accounting. The pair worked together for 18 months and quickly formed a friendship. With Samantha leaving their workplace six months before Nick to start her accountancy firm, it didn’t take Nick long to reach out to Cooper Accounting for assistance when it came to managing his business accounts.
